Why Your OTT & CTV Campaigns Aren’t Working (And How to Fix Them)

Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of emails from clients asking the same question:

“Why aren’t our OTT and CTV campaigns performing, even with a big ad budget behind them?”

If you’ve ever felt that frustration, you’re not alone. We’ve stepped in to help several brands rework campaigns that struggled to hit their goals on streaming platforms. And in almost every case, the problem wasn’t the media spend — it was the mindset.

The biggest shift brands need to make is this:

Stop treating OTT like traditional broadcast.

The Reality of OTT: Second Screening

Most people aren’t sitting on the couch giving streaming ads their full attention. They’re watching Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube while scrolling on their phone, checking email, or multitasking. This behavior is called second screening, and it completely changes how your content needs to work.

OTT and CTV are passive viewing environments. That means your message has to be clear, fast, and designed to cut through distraction.

When we create OTT campaigns for our clients, we always keep this reality front and center.

Three Rules for Better OTT Performance

Over time, we’ve found three simple but powerful principles that consistently improve engagement and conversion.

  1. Mention the Brand Within the First 3 Seconds

If viewers don’t know who you are right away, you’ve already lost them.

Your product or brand name should be spoken or shown within the first three seconds of the ad. Because OTT is passive, hearing the brand early helps trigger recognition and recall. And it shouldn’t stop there — the brand should be reinforced throughout the beginning, middle, and end of the creative.

This isn’t about being repetitive. It’s about being memorable.

  1. Build Around a Universal Truth

Every strong OTT ad needs to be rooted in something your audience immediately recognizes.

A universal truth is a shared experience or pain point you and your audience both understand. It could be something humorous, frustrating, or relatable:

Standing in the grocery line behind someone with 50 items in the “10 items or less” lane

Dealing with dry skin while running errands

Struggling to balance side hustles and everyday life

When an ad reflects something real, people lean in—even if they’re half distracted. Humor and relatability work especially well here because they feel human, not manufactured.

This is where creativity shines, but it has to be grounded in insight, not just visuals.

  1. End With a Strong Call to Action

This is the most overlooked part of OTT creative.

Too many ads end with nothing more than a logo on screen. No direction. No purpose. No next step.

A strong call to action tells the viewer exactly what to do:

Visit the website

Download the app

Try the product

Without it, even the best creative struggles to convert attention into action.

Keep It Simple (For a Reason)

These rules may sound obvious, but they work because they respect how people actually consume content today.

As a creative production company, we love pushing ideas and building beautiful campaigns. But creativity should never get in the way of clarity. The best OTT ads balance both.

We always start by learning our audience deeply:

How they watch

What they care about

What distracts them

What motivates them

From there, we design content that feels natural in a distracted environment instead of fighting against it.

Final Thought

OTT and CTV are not broken platforms. They just demand a new way of thinking.

If your streaming campaigns aren’t working, don’t immediately blame the budget or the platform. Look at how the story is being told.

Remember:

Say the brand early

Speak to a universal truth

End with a strong call to action

And most importantly…

Stop viewing OTT like traditional broadcast. Design for distraction.
